Realsportsrealtalk Midweek Commentary: Can Southern break the Braves jinx?…CAN SOUTHERN FINALLY BEAT ALCORN STATE?

As a kid , I attended many Southern University football games with my grandmother, MAMA JAG. I remember one game back in 1982, Otis Washington’s second season saw Southern go into old Henderson Stadium in Lorman, Miss and defeat Marino Caseum’s Braves 17-12. That same year, Southern finished 8-3. I have also witness the Jaguars defeat every team in the SWAC over the years. However, one team stands out the most that has given Southern fits….ALCORN STATE BRAVES. For some reason, those Braves seem to get up for Southern and play like there’s no tomorrow. I mean, the Braves could have a bad year but some how gives Southern the blues with trick plays to win at the last minute. The history of these tow teams goes way back to the 50’s. During the sixties and 70’s , They played to an even stand. However, in the seventies and 80’s , The Braves seem to get the best of the Jaguars. During the 90’s , Southern even up the score. Now during the 2000’s to recent, it’s been tick for tack with the last 5 games going to the Braves. After hiring former coach Jay Hopson, the Braves have dominated Southern. Now, enters former Brave QB and Head Coach Fred McNair. With his first season being a struggle and the high flying Jaguars coming in with an undefeated SWAC record, can the tide change?

ALCORN

Alcorn has dominated the SWAC the last 3-4 years with former signal caller John Gibbs at the helm winning 2 straight SWAC championships. Just last season , Grambling State came back on the scene looking to dethrone the Braves stealing a win 35-34 in Lorman. However, for the rematch in Houston, the Braves were back to their old ways blast the G-MEN 49-21 for 2015 SWAC Championship.  For some reason Alcorn has been sort of the big bully towards Southern. I mean, really stealing the Jags swagger and winning the game. Coach Dawson Odums is 0-5 against Alcorn State. Odums has defeated everyone else in the conference. This game should be a challenge for Odums, his staff and the Jaguar Nation to finally get that monkey off their backs.

The Braves enter the game off a bye week looking for some momentum as the are tied for first place in the East with a re surging Jackson State team at 3-2. QB Lenooris Footman seems to be getting back his old ways. Footman was the JAG killer last season as the Braves throttle the Jags in a typhoon in Baton Rouge 48-7. However, the Braves have struggles as of late dropping 2 games already to UAPB and Grambling. Southern on the other hand has started conference play with a bang 4-0 defeating both Alabama State , AAMU, Jackson Sate and recently UAPB. Also, Jags RB Lenard Tillery looks to become the league’s all time rusher and what game to accomplish that feat….against nemesis Alcorn State.

Can the Jags break the Jinx?………………..Stay tuned…….
