As we reach the mid point of the season, we already know that the next few weeks going to clear up the race for Houston and beyond. This week’s GAME OF THE WEEK features the Southern Jaguars traveling to Jackson to take on the Jackson State Tigers in one of the fiercest rivalry in HBCU football. Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium will be rocking as always. Fans alike from both schools as well as from other SWAC schools migrate to the capital city for the weekend . The bands also make this game great as both always put on a great show.
Southern has been off for the past two weeks and it gave the Jags time to heal and build as they bring their 2-0 SWAC record into the contest. Coach Odums has done a great job in keeping the Jags grounded but at the same time keeping them hungry for more. QB Justin Howard has been phenomena as he has passes for 988 yards and 11 TD’s. RB Lenard Tillary is getting closer to breaking the SWAC’S all time leading rushing mark. He currently sits at 538 yards and 3td’s. WR Willie Quinn has picked up where he left off last season as he has 27 balls for 483 yards and 6 tds. TE Dillon Beard has been the X factor as he has caught 14 balls for 208 yards and 3 td’s . The defense has been great also in SWAC play . Coach Trei Oliver, the Jaguars Defensive Coordinator has instituted a new 4/2/5 scheme that takes away a lot of passing teams schemes but it also puts pressure up front on opposing QB’s. SS Danny Johnson leads the team with 4 INT’S this season.
Jackson State is coming off a bye. The Tigers have won their last 2 straight since losing their first three. Coach Tony Hughes has turned the Tiger program around with key hires such as former Southern QB CO-OC Chad Germany, as Tigers new OC. With Germany, the Tigers have a creative mind who can move the chains. Also, Germany does has some ideas on how to attack the Jaguars personnel. Hughes will counter with QB Brent Lyles, who has passed for 567 yards and 3 td’s. WR Dan Williams 359 yards recieving and 3 td’s paces the Tigers air game. Defensively , JSU is lead by Preston Hughes 27 stops.

Texas Southern is riding high after starting the SWAC season with a 3-1 record. The Tigers travel to Lorman, Mississippi to take on the Alcorn State Braves. Coach Mike Haywood has turned the Tiger fortunes into something special. QB Avion Hurts paces the offense 965 yards passing and 8 td’s. WR Austin Watts and Tracy Johnson paces the Tigers air game. RB Tyler Cook has came on as of late for a 139 yards and 3 td’s as of late. Defensively, TSU is paced by Jamal Lucas 41 stops.
Alcorn comes in on a the heels of a victory at AAMU. QB Noah Johnson 640 yards and 4 tds paces the offense. WR McKenzie Jabor leads the pass catchers with 33 balls for 378 yards and 2 td’s. RB Aaron Baker leads a balance attack on the ground.

Mississippi Valley takes it’s win less record into Montgomery to take on a struggling Alabama State Hornets team. MVSU is still looking to break through with it’s first win. AAMU is coming off a tough loss at home to Alcorn State. There have been rumblings about Coach Spady’s job in the Bulldog den. However, the season must go on. AAMU travels to Pine Bluff to take on the UAPB Lions. AAMU is paced by QB D’Angelo Ballard 1039 yards and 5 TD’S. RB Jordan Bentley 485 yards and 6 td’s paces the Bulldogs ground game.
