As we began the 2016 football season, there was a lot to prove by many teams. The Grambling State Tigers coming off a tough loss to Alcorn State in the 2015 SWAC Championship game in Houston, had something to prove. With the loss of All SWAC QB Johnathan Williams and now NFL WR Chester Rogers, WR Chad Williams felt like had had something to prove also.
Williams had a tough off season as he was arrested along with a few other friends in our hometown of Baton Rouge for marijuana possession. It was considered a misdemeanor charge so he was able to re join the Tigers. However, Coach Broderick Fobbs has rules and starting the 2016 season, Williams was suspended for the first game of the season.
After sitting out , Williams wanted to prove his worth in gold. The senior exploded against PAC 12 foe Arizona for 13 catches for 152 yards. The Tigers lead 21-3 at half before losing 31-21. Williams continued his scorching play at Jackson State as he caught 7 balls for 131 yards and 1TD. That game the G-Men dominated JSU 35-14. Williams has played like a man possessed. The senior best game came in a rematch with the Alcorn State Braves. Williams devoured the Braves secondary as he caught 13 balls for 188 yards and 1td. He helped the Tigers get revenge with a 43-18 victory. Williams has caught the eye of the NFL as he continues to move up the NFL potential draft board at the Wide Receiver position.
The Tigers traveled to Dallas to take on the Prairie View Panthers in the State Fair Classic. This game was for the lead in the SWAC’s west division. After falling behind 16-0, the G-Men roared back to a 36-16 victory. In that game Williams, came alive to catch 6 balls for 83 yards and 1 td. Going into an open week, Williams is second behind Southern’s Willie Quinn with 39 catches for 554 yards and 3 tds. However, Chad Williams still has plenty of games ahead to increase those numbers. With the addiction of FBS Transfers Montrel Menader and Johnthan Williams , Chad Williams knew that he had to put his stamp as the leader of the Tigers receiving corps. Other returning Tigers were Verlan Hunter ( 17 for 179 and 4tds) and Dominique Leak ( 18 for 269 and 1td ) are also putting their stamp on the G-Men passing game. However, it’s Chad Williams whose making a name but also creating a brand for himself and the NFL scouts to take heed of. Williams goal is a 2016 SWAC championship and a Celebration Bowl victory. He next goal is to join former G-MEN Chester Rogers on Sundays……..
