As we move into mid season, the college football season has seen it’s twist and turns. However, as the Southwestern Athletic Conference goes, the ” wild, wild ” west will be won either in Texas or possibly on Louisiana soil. This weekend, the Grambling State Tigers take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers in what is billed as the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic. This game means a lot in the western division as both the Tigers and Panthers are fighting to stay on top along with the idle Southern University Jaguars. A loss could be damaging as the season goes on for the ticket to Houston. Last year the G-Men survived the massacre 70-56 as they were able to hang on for the rest of the season as the representative of the Western Division on the SWAC Championship Game.
This year, the G-Men bring a new leader in town as he returns home to Dallas to play in front of his family. QB DeVante Kincade , an Ole Miss transfer has be nothing short of phenomenal as he has taken the Tigers to new heights. Kincade’s numbers reflect his value to the team. His 820 yards passing and 8td’s are tops in the conference. WR Chad Williams has been playing lights out all season. Williams has been Kincade’s top threat as he 33 catches for 471 yards and 2 tds are only second behind Southern’s Willie Quinn. Williams has been a monster as he hopes to continue his terrific play in hope of impressing NFL gurus. RB Martez Carter has been great also. Carter dynamic play has produced nearly 150 yards rushing and 2td’s . The Tigers defense has been great as the have held PAC 12’S Arizona Wildcats to 3 points in the first of their ball game 2 weeks ago. Guy Stallworth’s 27 tackles is tops for the Tigers.
Prairie View A&M has been a history maker all season long. The Panthers opened up their brand smack-in new stadium in front of a national audience with a victory of rival Texas Southern 28-25. After being blasted by SEC Texas A&M 67-0, the Panthers reeled off 2 road victories over Alabama A&M 40-21 and MVSU 56-21. Willie Simmons knows this game will go a long way in determining who will win the west. QB Trey Green’s 819 yards passing and 6TD’s is great. However, his 6 INT’s hurt. WR KhaDarel Hodge (17 Rec/255 yds/3 TD) leads the passing game. RB Sta’fon McCray (23 Rush/204 Yds/2 TD) leads the ground game. The Panthers defense will have a tough task slowing down the G-Men potent offense. Terrence Singleton’S 27 stops leads the Purple Rush.
With all the pageantry that comes along with this game, it could be another show stopper. However, the loser will have a tough time trying to recover. Southern University will have a lot to say as well. Stay tuned…………
