Many fans attend HBCU athletic events because of the pageantry along with the traditions. Fans also attend the football games because of the halftime shows that all HBCU bands perform as well as the excitement. Speaking of excitement, there’s a little dude down in Baton Rouge putting on a show himself. He is worth the price of admission many would believe. Willie Quinn, a senior wide receiver , punt returner and kickoff returner on the Southern University football team has been more exciting then ever. Just this past weekend, Quinn was named SWAC conference specialist of the week. Quinn put up huge numbers against foe Alabama State as he he hauled in four receptions for 178 yards and three receiving TDs. He also threw a 30-yard passing TD and returned his 10th punt for a TD on a 78-yard return. Quinn also leads the SWAC in all purpose yardage at 225 per game and is second receiving yardage per game. He is also first in scoring as well. Quinn has brought back excitement to the Jaguar Nation as well as for the SWAC.
Willie Quinn , a Miami native prepped at Miami Jackson High school. At Jackson, Quinn dazzled as he lead the team in receiving, punt returns , kickoff return as well as played some defenses also. Small in statue , Quinn didn’t really sat the recruiting world on fire. Two schools showed interest heading into his senior year, Marshall and Western Kentucky, however, it was a journey getting him to Southern University. Once he arrived on the Bluff, everything feel into place. An opportunity to showcase what he could do was all the mattered to him. Former Southern football coach, Stump Mitchell and his staff rolled the dice and it paid off. With Southern having a bad year and Dawson Odums coming aboard, experimenting to find a formula that works paid off. Quinn bust on to the scene in 2013 as he made a name for himself as a specialist. That same year , Quinn had 753 yards receiving as well as 7 TD’S. His numbers continued to improve as well as he play as Odums begin implementing more plays designed for his type of play. Quinn helped the Jaguars win the 2013 SWAC Championship and again return back to the 2014 game before falling to Alcorn State. Quinn did however put on a show in that game also.
As we head into week 5 of the college football season, Quinn has already shocked the world and continues to soar with his play. Heading into Huntsville to take on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Southern fans know there will be excitement at the ball game and I am not talking about the Human Jukebox. Quinn will look to excite fans of both schools as he hopes not only to pad his stats , but to get the Jags another win to stay in the west race for the crown. And yes…Mr Excitement will be in the building.
