PVAMU , Texas A&M…making history…..GMEN travel to PAC 12 Arizona…JAGS tangle with Tulane….Hornets, Braves open SWAC slate….

pvamu-vs-tamuCoach Willie Simmons knows FBS football for sure. As a star QB on the Clemson Tigers, Simmons is use to playing in front of huge crowds. However, fresh off a conference win over rival Texas Southern, the Panthers travel into uncharted territory as they collide with Coach Kevin Sumlin and his Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, Texas. The Aggies are fresh off a key non conference win themselves as they hung on to defeat PAC 12 foe UCLA. This match up will be history in the making. Prairie View A&M is about a 40 minute ride from College Station. This will be the first time that both neighboring schools meet on the gridiron. PVAMU, a historical black college has been in existence for nearly 100 years or so. Known for it’s agricultural , engineering and educational programs, it was a top tier HBCU to serve African Americans educational needs. Former coach and Hall of Famer Billy Nicks put the Panthers on the map as the won several national black championships along with several Southwestern Athletic Championships. The school was later included into the Texas A&M University System. With legends such as Zelmo Beatty , Otis Taylor and Ken Houston , the Panthers football program was tops. However , segregation and Jim Crow policies keep the Panthers from playing their counterparts in College Station. However today, times have changed and history will be made this Saturday. Both Coach Simmons and Sumlin knows what’s at stake here and what this game means to all involved. PVAMU will be lead by QB Trey Green and WR Kadarel Hodge. Both of them hooked up for 2 td’s in their win over Texas Southern. Texas A&M will counter with QB Trevor Knight fresh off a 239 yard passing and 1 TD and WR Josh Reynolds. While history will be made , I truly believe the Panthers will fight however, the SEC foe will come out on top…………

Coach Broderick Fobbs takes his Tigers , fresh off a whipping of Virginia Lychburg 72-12 to Tuscon to tangle with Arizona. QB DeVante Kincade looks to improve and impress as he will be tested against a tough Wildcat defense. Kincade passed and rushed for several TD’s in the victory over the Dragons. Arizona looks to make a statement against the FCS Tigers. Coach Rich Rodriguez will counter with RB Nick Wilson whose 138 yards and 2tds paced the Wildcats. QB Anu Solomon 213 yards passing is tops. GSU could pose some problems for the Wildcats offensively. However, I see Arizona winning this one.

Southern University fresh off a close lose to Sun Belt’s foe ULM looks to make history themselves as they head down to New Orleans to take on the Tulane Green Wave. Southern play well enough to win however once in the red zone the Jags offense bogged down settling for three instead of seven. RB Lenard Tillery paced the Jags with 161 yards rushing and 1 TD. WR Willie Quinn continues to make noise as his 241 yards of total offense plus a TD is an added plus. QB Austin Howard has shown great leadership qualities in leading the Jags offense. Willie Fritz takes over at Tulane and has the Greenies looking for their first win of the season also. Tulane is coming off a tough loss 7-3 to Wake Forest. Tulane will counter with QB  Glen Cuiellette (12-23/134 Yds). This game will be a good one. Southern will get a chance to correct some mistakes , however I do see Tulane winning this one…..

There will be a key SWAC Match up this week as the Alabama State Hornets invade Lorman, Miss to take on the Alcorn State Braves. Coach Brian Jenkins knows that this game will speak volumes in the East race. The Hornets are coming off a tough loss to FBS foe UTSA 26-13. Alabama State is paced by RB Khalid Thomas and QB : Jujuan Young-Battle. Coach Fred Mc Nair takes over on the reservation as head coach. Mc Nair is a former QB at Alcorn and he knows the territory. Alcorn was leading Bethune Cookman 13-7 in Daytona Beach before the game was called due to the weather. QB : Lenorris Footman will lead the Braves offense. This will be a tough match up to call. However, playing at home does has it’s advantages. Braves over the Hornets in a tough one….

Jackson State looks to rebound as it travels to Memphis to take on Tennesse State in the annual Southern Heritage Classic. Coach Tony Hughes is looking to break into the win column against the OVC’S Tigers. JSU will counter with QB LaMontiez Ivy (14-34/141 Yds/1  pacing the Blue Bengals offense. Tennessee State coming off a 44-0 shallacking of SWAC foe UAPB will counter with QB O’Shay Ackerman-Carter (18-32/259 Yds/2 TD/1 INT) and WR  Patrick Smith (6 Rec/110 Yds/TD). Coach Reed knows that this game is a heated rilvary that has been played for many years. My take….Tennessee State add to JSU misery……

Many would say that Alabama A&M coach James Spady may be on the hot seat as he begin his 4th season at the helm. However, with only 7 wins and 17 losses including last weeks loss to Middle Tennessee State didn’t sit well with the Bulldog Nation. Spady leads his team into a crucial SWAC Match up at Mississippi Valley State. The Bulldogs are paced by     QB  De’Angelo Ballard. The Delta Devils are coming off a 61-14 thrashing themselves to the hands of Eastern Mighigan. Coach Comegy knows that a win here would put the Devils in uncahrted territory. MVSU is lead by QB Austin Bray (19-36/146 Yds/1 TD) and WR Joshua Banks (4 Rec/59 Yds/1 TD. My take is that MVSU gets a home victory…….

UAPB , coming off a thrashing to Tennesse State , welcomes small school Panhandle State into Pine Bluff. The Lions are lead by  Brandon Duncan. The Panhandle State Aggies , coming off a loss as well as paced by QB Shane Truelove (17-27/219 Yds/1 TD) and WR  Andrew Hernandez (7 Rec/133 Yds/2 TD)…..This game will be a toss up…….

Texas Southern will look to give coach Micheal Haywood his first victory as they travel across town to take on the Houston Baptist Huskies. TSU is fresh off a tough loss 28-25 to rival PVAMU in the Labor Day Classic. TSU is lead by QB Jay Christopher (5-8/112 Yds/1 TD) and WR  Derrick Griffin (6 Rec/90 Yds/1 TD). HBU , in it’s third year as a NCAA football program is paced by QB  Tony Dawson (10-27/127 Yds.  My take……TSU Tigers break into the winners column………
