The 2016 edition of college football kicks off tonight. There are a few contest slated for this evening however, there is one contest slated in the City of Sin. The new look Jackson State Tigers invade Las Vegas, Nevada to take on the University of Nevada at Las Vegas this evening. The Tigers are lead by new coach, Tony Hughes. Hughes is a long time assistant who is known for his recruiting expertise in the State of Mississippi as well as throughout the south east region. Hughes coached at various schools which included SEC foes Ole Miss and Mississippi State , just recently.
After watching Jackson State program flounder under former coach Harold Jackson , many Tiger Faithful began wondering if JSU would ever return to the days of glory. Rick Comengy , now at Mississippi Valley State was the last coach to lead the Tigers to the SWAC Championship game , however losing the last two trips didn’t sat well with the Blue Bengal faithful as well. However, word got out that Tony Hughes , who was already season still wanted to be a head coach. Well, after an exhausting search, the Tigers finally got their man.
Already, Hughes has infused life back into the program. Hughes went out and hired away a gem of a coach, former Southern University co-offensive coordinator Chad Germany. Germany, a Tennessee State alum and former QB knows the SWAC and JSU well. However, Germany brings more than just a resume to the table. Germany brought some Louisiana talent along with a playbook that can put the Tigers back in the hunt for the east division crown. But tonight, the Tigers will be tested against a tough UNLV team.
JSU will be lead by QB LaMontiez Ivy , a strong armed QB that has thrown for nearly 2,200 yards and 15TD’s. WR Dan Williams is slowly approaching the school’s record for receptions leads the Tigers WR’S with 54 catches. RB Robert Johnson looks to get the Tigers ground game going as well. LB/DE JeVancy Jones leads the Tiger defense. UNLV, a Mountain West foe will be a great test for the new look Tigers. Can Tony Hughes lead the Tigers back to the promise land……Time will tell……
