Realsportsrealtalk Commentary: Has Harold Jackson taken a once proud JSU program down?…..

Good morning,

I am starting a mid week commentary as it relates to all sports in general. Today, I would like to give my take on the once proud and dominant Jackson State football program. Growing up in Baton Rouge attending Southern University games was a norm. But when it came to playing Jackson State, that game was just as huge as the Bayou Classic. You see, many other SWAC schools touted SU as a pretty boy school. So beating them was always a challenge. However, W.C.Gordon and his Mississippi boys always played the bully role when playing Southern home or away. JSU would trot out on the field and circle the entire field with those red face mask talking smack and trying to intimidate . They were huge and athletic. Before the game even had started, they had gained an edge in the mind games category. For many years, I have seen a proud JSU team defeat SU 41-0, 31-0 , 56-0 just to name a few. JSU dominated a majority of the eighties as W.C. Gordon won several SWAC championships during that time. JSU recruited top athletes and with a huge 60 k stadium, the enviroment was always exciting. W.C Gordon, a Mississippi Hall of Fame inductee won at least 80 percent of his games at JSU. Big Daddy James Carson continue the winning ways heading into the 90’s. Upon his death,  JSU even participated in the first SWAC Championship game in 1999 losing to Southern 31-30. The program started to take a slide when James Bell was hired by former A.D. Culberson . Bell lost a huge percentage of games during his tenure. He even lost players as attriction took a toll on the once mighty program. I remember JSU playing SU in New Orleans getting blasted 47-7. Ricj Comengy rivived the program in the mid 2000’s as the former Tuskegee coach was able to bring in quality athletes as well as pride back to the program. JSU won a few SWAC Championships under Comengy’s leadership , however with a change in school’s leadership among other things, Comengy was let go after leading JSU to the 2013 championship eventually losing to Southern 34-27 in double OT. JSU’S former A.D. Vivian Fuller pulled the trigger which sent a huge dissatisfaction through Tigerland and a surprise throughout the SWAC. In comes former Tiger great Harold Jackson. Jackson’s first year was a disaster as his Tigers finished near the bottom of the east division losing to former coach Comengy now at MVSU also. This years team is also becoming a flop as well letting SU and GSU put 50 plus scores on them. Jackson who is nearly 70 in age might be in too deep. Many JSU folk have called for his head and if the losses keep piling up, they may get their wish. JSU has fallen like Vanilla Ice. A once proud program has become the laughing stock on many fan boards with the SWAC. Harold Jackson had the right idea for his alma mater but was he the right man for the job?”…….Time will tell……..,
