OK, It’s been a long summer and Fall is upon us. Many of us have tasted and smelled the fresh air of football. A few NFL preseason games is not enough to feel my appetite. Well the wait is over and starting tommorrow, the dishes are are served. Last season’s National HBCU and SWAC Champ heads into Atlanta to take on the ACC’S Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on national television via ESPN3. Coach Hopson has done a great job in Lorman as the Braves are set for a repeat at running the SWAC table. Lead by Senior QB sensation John Gibbs, the Braves offense can be dynamic and hot at the same time. Gibbs had garnered several indivual awards as well as being named HBCU’s POY. However, it seems that Coach Hopson wants to challenge his experienced Braves by tackling an early opponent like the Yellow Jackets to guage where they are. Also, a nice paycheck comes along with it for the school’s athletic department. Coach Paul Johnson ‘s team is coming off a big win at this past year’s Orange Bowl over the SEC’S Mississippi State Bulldogs. Coach Johnson employs an offense that is old school. Running the veer gives opponent’s fits as well as the Yellow Jackets do rack up the points. Well, my take…..John Gibbs will feel the pressure and must use his experience to navigate the Braves offense however, too much of that Georgia Tech veer will doomed the Braves……………..
Realsportsrealtalk prediction ..Georgia Tech 42-14
Other games to note include :
Southern University, fresh of the NCAA’s APR list and runner up to Alcorn State last season heads north to Ruston to take on the FBS Louisiana Tech at Joe Alliet Stadium. Southern is lead by QB Austin Howard, who surprised everyone by leading the Jaguars back to the SWAC Championship game. Howard threw for nearly 2000 yards as well as direct one of the most prolific offenses in the SWAC. RB Leonard Tillary is a preseason SWAC favorite and he lead the Jags on the ground. WR Willie Quinn also returns to electricfy the crowd again with his speed and agility to make big plays. The Jags defense will be tested early as they try to replace a few guys that made the Jags defense one of the toughest in the SWAC. The secondary has it’s work cut out. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are lead by Coach Skip Holtz , who is the son of legendary coach Lou Holtz. Kenneth Dixon, Jeff Driskel , Vernon Butler and Kentrell Brice lead the Bulldogs in mostly every category. QB Jeff Driskel is coming off a great year as he navigated the Bulldogs to several wins. RB Ken Dixon leads the ground attack also. The Bulldog’s defense can be stingy at sometimes. Lead by DE Vontarrius Dora, a Lombardi candidate. Well my take…….Southern will bring the crowd and the entertainment. However, opening up against the heavy favorite Bulldogs is a tough pill to swallow……..
Realsportsrealtalk prediction….La Tech 31-7
Mississippi Valley State takes to the road as Coach Rick Comengy’s second year opens up in Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Lobos. The Delta Devils are coming off a disappointing season as the fell to the last spot in the SWAC’S Eastern divison. QB Qutavias Peterson looks to lead the Delta Devils offense into better territory. WR Booket T Chambers lead a group of receivers looking to make a name for themselves. Defensively , Khalil Young will lead a young bunch. Coach Bob Davie, a former Notre Dame head coach leads the Lobos into his third year. QB Lamar Jordan leads an offense that is sort of luke warm. RB Jhurell Pressley leads the ground game . The Lobos air game will try to find a new face as this years group all have under 200 yards recieving. Defensively, the Lobos are lead by DE Nik Davanzo. My take is ……..Lobos win big…
Realsportsrealtalk prediction….New Mexico 56-12
Coach of the year , Brian Fobbs lead his G-MEN into California to take on the PAC 12’S CAL Bears in Berkley. QB Johnathan Williams leads the Tiger attach in the air as well as on the ground. Williams throw for nearly 2000 yards and rushed for nearly 500. WR Chester Rogers leads a capable group of having a huge day if given a chance. The Tigers will be looking not only to upset the FBS Bears, but open the season on a winning note. Coach Sonny Dykes , a former La. Tech coach lead the Bears to a 9-4 record last season. QB Jared Goff leads the Bear attack with nearly 4000 yards passing. RB Daniel Lasco rushed for nearly 12oo yards on the ground. WR/KR Trevor Davis can be counted on as well. My take……Cal feast on the Tigers.
Realsportsreatalk prediction..Cal 42-17
Jackson State takes to the road as the Tigers travel to Tennesse to take on the Middle Tennesse State Blue Raiders. Coach Harold Jackson would like to forget last season as his Tigers finished with one of the school’s worst records. However, Jackson is hoping that the Tigers can start anew. Lead by QB Lamontiez Tivy, the dynamic QB can do it all for JSU. Tivy threw 22 TD’S BUT 14 int didn’t help much. RB Jarius Moore leads the ground game and WR Dan Williams leads all the pass catchers. Defensively, Jevancy Leads the Tigers in tackles. MTSU Coach Rick Stockstill isn’t a push over either. Stockstill is 37-27 and has lead the Blue Raiders to a few winning seasons. QB Austin Grammer leads the MTSU attach with nearly 2600 yards in pasing. RB Shane Tucker leads a group of ground gainers. WR Marcus Henry leads the wideouts with nearly 500 yards recieving. My take…MTSU wins
Realsportsrealtalk prediction…..MTSU 31-6
Coach James Spady takes his AAMU Bulldogs to the mid west to take on the Cinncinatti Bear Cats. QB D’Angelo Ballard gets the nod against the Bear cats. RB Jaquin Davis could tote the note for the Bulldog’s ground game. There is a bevy of WR’S that can get the job done. UC is lead by QB Gunner Keil. Keil is a former 4 star QB with lots od potential. My take…..Bearcats win big.
Coach Darryl Asberry has had a long summer to digest the idea that TSU is free from NCAA chains and can now play for a championship. Assberry has been praised for getting the Tigers back on track in the classroom as well as on the field. With 2 SOLID recruiting classes, the Tigers are primed to upseat Grambling and Southern as the team to beat in the SWAC Western division. Heading into their rivary game against the PVAMU Panthers, QB Johnathan Bowen seems ready to lead the Tigers offense. Last year’s QB Homer Causey will work the defensive side of the ball as a corner back. WR’S Larry Clarke and Malik Cross alongt with TE Billy Rosenberg give the Tigers several ,options in the passing game. Amir Bloom leads the Tigers defense at DE. Bloom seeks to continue the TSU NFL pipeline as he continues to dominate the line of scrimmage. LB Darrian Claiborne also brings some nastiness to the Tiger’s defense as he controls the middle. PVAMU has a new man in charge, Willie Simmons. Simmons is the former OC at Alcorn State. He takes over for Hirisham Northern , now the DC at TSU. PVAMU is lead by RB Johnta Hebert. Hebert is a preseason All SWAC pick. Hebert makes the Panthers go. My take …TSU will make a statement.
Other SWAC games to note….
UAPB VS. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE in the SWAC/MEAC CHALLEGE IN ORLANDO, FLA.
Alabama State vs. Tennesse State in Nashville, Tn. John Merritt Classic……..
