SWAC FOOTBALL: SU/JSU BOOM/BOX CLASSIC TOPS THIS WEEK SLATE…….

Good morning, Lets’ get at it. We are moving into the 3/4 portion of the SWAC portion of the schedule and the only thing we know is that the GMEN are back. GSU leads the SWAC at 5-0 are idle this week. All eyes are on Jackson, Mississippi and the 3-1 Southern Jaguars try to stay close to the GMEN invade Mississippi Veterans  Memorial Stadium to take on the fledgling 1-3 Jackson State Tigers. Both teams met in last year’s SWAC Championship game with SU winning 34-27 in 2 OT’S. This season , the Jags have started out slow but picked it up with nice wins over PV, UAPB and AAMU losing only to Alcorn State. Lead by QB Justin Howard , the Jags have been scoring points with the running game lead by 3 RB’S who are all capable of of having big games. The WR’s are lead by Willie Quinn, a small guy with a big game. The defense has been given a break as they have gotten several key guys back who started the season waiting on NCAA claerance and they have been cleared at the right time. The Jaguar Nation has awakened and I expect to see 60K for sure. The JSU Tigers made an unexpected coaching change and with change come growing pains. The Tigers have lost 2 straight games including a 27-23 stunner to the MVSU Delta Devils coached by former JSU COACH RICK COMENGY. JSU has suffered several turnovers in games that have cost them. The defense has blown several coverages as opposing WR have burned them. However, this is a rivalry for ages. With both band participating in a Friday night battle of the bands to raise money for their programs, this weekend could turn out to be something. The Jaguar Nation looks to take over Jackson and come out on top… Other key games include:

Alcorn State ( 5-2 , 4-1 ) AT PVAMU ( 2-5 , 2-3)

The Braves got back into the winning column with a win over Texas Southern for Homecoming to remain on top in the EAST. QB John Gibbs continue to shine as he continues to Pass and run into the record books. RB Ragsdale continues the ground game assualt. Coach Hopson’s defense is playing great ball as well limiting opponents in the red zone. PVAMU has been hot of late picking up 2 straight wins to climb back in the WEST race needing help though. QB Lovelace and RB Hebert have lead the Panthers in every category. The offense can give defenses fits. The Panther defense has stiffened limiting opponents in the red zone also. Iexpect this game to be high scoring with the winner being the team to score last.

AAMU( 2-5 , 1-3) VS. Alabama State ( 4-3 , 3-2)

This game is a classic itself as both team seek bragging rights in the State of Alabama. The Bulldogs have struggled of late losing close games at home to GSU and SU. The Pistol offense has it’s ups and downs. AAMU has given up big 3rd down plays which allowed opponents to score at needed times. ASU has struggled of late as well losing at Alcorn and at PV. The Hornets started out hot but has cooled thus far. Their defense has play great in spurts. However, this game could make or break one’ season. My take, the Hornets will come alive and stave off the Bulldogs for the win.

UAPB( 1-5 , 0-5) AT Texas Southern ( 5-2, 3-2)

The Lions have suffered enough as they have become Homeming bait for the last 3 opponents and they will be bait once more as they travel to Houston to take on the TSU Tigers. Coach Coleman’s team has had it’s growing pains but they have scored points as well but not enough to win. Their defense has given up too much in the end. TSU on the other hand is coming off a lose at Alcorn and seeks to climb back in it with a Homecoming win. However, thsi game could be a trap game as the Lions always plays TSU tough. With TSU’S weapons, I expect the Tigers to come out on top…….
