SWAC FOOTBALL: Tonight is the night!!…..Key games on tap this weekend

Good morning, Ok let’s get to it. We are near the mid point of the college football season and conference races are starting to heat up. Big games include SEC matchups LSU @ Auburn , Texas A&M @ Mississippi State and Alabama @ Ole Miss sat the tone of what will be expected throughout the college season. However, in SWAC, tonight came make or break either Alcorn or Alabama State season as both take a ( 3-0 ) record into tonight’s match up that could decide the East Division. The Hornets are flying high after blowing away TSU 38-3 at home to sat the table for tonight. Lead by RB Cyrus, the Hornets ground game can be unstable. Alcorn is coming off a 56-16 throttling of Southern University at home as well. QB John Gibbs had over 6oo yards of total offense against the Jags. The winner of tonight’s game may have the inside track to Houston.

Other games of note:

Grambling State ( 2-3 , 2-0 ) at Alabama A&M ( 2- 3 , 1-1 )

GSU is riding high after stealing a win from PVAMU in Dallas 26-20 to remain underfeated in SWAC Play. The Tigers are lead by QB Johnathan Williams who seems to be putting the Tigers on his back. The Tigers defense has awakaen as they have limited opponents. AAMU picked up their first conference win at MVSU 42-20. AAMU got going early and often in Coach Spady’s Pistol offense. With the historic ” Louis Crews Classic ” on tap this weekend, I expect the Bulldogs to ease out a win at home over the Tigers.

UAPB ( 1-4 , 0-2 ) at Southern University ( 2-3 , 1-1 )

UAPB is coming off a tough OT loss at home to Jackson State 33-30. The Lions played well and even lead during the contest. Coach Coleman’s Lions are still trying to learn how to win again. With road games back to back coming up, it could be a long season. Southern is coming off a blowout loss at Alcorn 56-16. The Jags lead by Frosh QB Howard, have shown glimpses of perfection at times however growing paians are tough to ver come. With Homecoming at the theme, The Jaguars will get back on track with a much needed win at home.

PVAMU ( 0-4 , 0-2 ) at Jackson State ( 3-2 , 1-1 )

The Panthers were picked as one of the early season favorites to reach Houston, however things have not gone according to plan. PV has suffered close losses plus with the reduction of on the field timed due to low APR, things are getting kind of sticky on the hill. Lead by QB Lovelace, the Panthers offense can be explosive at times. The defense has had it’s ups and downs also. Jackson State is coming off an OT win over UAPB 33-30 but still has that bad taste in their mouth with the loss to GSU. The Tigers are trying to still close to both Alcorn and Alabama State for the East title. Lead by QB Ivy, JSU offense can be up and down , depending on what defenses at throwing at him. My take, JSU will continue their winning ways at home against a imbattled PVAMU team.

MVSU ( 1-3 , 0-2 ) at Texas Southern ( 4-1 , 2-1 )

The Devils have a tough task at hand as the try to get back on track on the road against a up and coming TSU Team. Lead by QB Patrick Ivy, the Devils have been short of perfection. With a defense that has giving up huge yardage, it could be a long day in Houston for the Devils. TSU coming off a 38-3 shallacking in Alabama, they look to get back in the race for the West with lowly Valley coming into to town. I look for the Tigers to get the much needed win.
