SWAC FOOTBALL: Big games planned this weekend……

Good morning,  As we move deeper into conference play, this weekend could change the landscape of who’s jockeying for position for the top spots in both the East and the West Divisons. Can Texas Southern make history? Can Alcorn continue the acind into Eastern dominance. Can Grambling win another one? More questions loom for Swac fans alike. Heading into this weekend’s games, positioning comes into play. Here is the docket:

Southern ( 2-2 , 1-0 ) at Alcorn State ( 3-1 , 1-0 )

The Jags are coming off a big win on the road over PVAMU 34-24. Southern’s defense keep the Panthers at bey for 3 quarters until ginving up 2 late TD’S before time expired. The Jags offense has been ground hogging as they ran for over 200 plus yards in the victory. Alcorn’s QB John Gibbs has been a monster of sorts. He is on pace to make a name for himself by the time he leaves Lorman next season. The Junior from Houston has amassed over 1000 yards in total offense. The Braves defense has been solid as they have forced turnovers and made opposing teams feel very uncormfortable. A 52-9 whipping at Valley is proof. Can SU run the ball against a strong Brave defense. Can Alcorn’s John Gibbs be slowed down?…….STAY TUNED…

AAMU ( 1-3 , 0-1 ) at Mississippi Valley State  ( 1-3 , 0-2 )

This game will decide who finishes last in the East as predicted by many. James Spady’s Bulldogs has been on a slide of late. The offense hasn’t really been firing on all cylinders. However, a game like this could start the engine. Rick Comengy’s team has been on fire either. The Devils have been slipping ever since their first victory aagainst Faith University. Being at home against an lowly AAMU team could wake the Devils up. Can Spady or Comengy break the ice?….Stay tuned…..

PVAMU ( 0-3 , 0-1 ) vs. Grambling State ( 1-3 , 1-0)

The Panthers have suffered three straight losses and can really take a step backwards with a loss to a much improved Grambling State team. Losing their Swac opener at home to Southern didn’t do any help either. Coach Northern has his sights on getting back into the race with a much needed victory. However, Coach Fobbs and his Tigers might think differently. Grambling is coming off a huge road win over Jackson State. The win sort of calmed down a lot of friction between both schools as last season forfiet made national headlines. Can PV break the ice or will GSU continue to soar again.?….Stay tuned….

Texas Southern ( 4-0 , 2-0 ) at Alabama State ( 3-1 , 2-0)

This game here is the FCS game of the week. Coach Asberry’s Tigers invade Hornet Stadium seeking a win to make a statement to Swac Schools that they are for real. The Tigers have been solid on both sides of the ball. However , playing at home, the Hornets are perfect and would like to keep it that way. State’s ground game has been nothing short of perfect. their defense has been stingy as well. Can TSU pull off a huge win for their program? Can the Hornets continue their dominance over the Tigers?…Stay tuned..

Jackson State ( 2-2 , 0-1 ) at UAPB ( 1-3 , 0-1 )

Coming off a hard fought loss to Grambling , the Tigers must re group if they want to get back into the race. 5 TURNOVERS killed them last week. To keep up with Alcorn and Alabama State , they must limit turnovers and not get caught up in the Lion’s den. UAPB is looking to break the ice as well as they look for their first SWAC win at home. Coach Coleman’s Lions are pretty tough at home and could cause a few problems for the Tigers. Can JSU pull out a win? Will UAPB protect the home turf?….Stay tuned…..
