Good morning, I hope everyone is ready for some football. As we approach the first third of the season, conference play looms and there are some huge games on slate this weekend that could make or break some teams early on. Starting tonight:
UAPB ( 1-1 ) visits Mongomery to take on the 2-1 Alabama State Hornets. The Lions are coming off a huge home win over NAIA power Concordia 31-0. Coach Monte Coleman’s Lions need to protect the ball on offense, move the chains and limit turnovers against a stingy Hornet defense. Hornets running backs are coming off a huge ground game against the MVSU Delta Devils where they nearly got 300 yards on the ground alone. Coach Reggie Barlow is looking to continue his winning ways as he looks to move the Hornets to an underfeated SWAC record.
Alcorn State ( 2-1 ) heads up into the Delta to take on the MVSU ( 1-2 ) Delta Devils. Coach Hopson has his braves playing great right now with QB John Gibbs leading the way. The Braves have blown out 2 NAIA opponents 107-17 but losing to Southern Miss by only 6 points. Rick Comengy has brought MVSU some SWAG as the Devils seek to get back to their winning ways in conference play. Coming off a road loss to Alabama State, the Devils play the Hornets tough early on but fail 47-22. The Braves look to keep rolling toward Houston.
Southern (1-2) has dealt with more problems off the field then on the field. The Jags have been dealing with certifying their athletes according to NCAA rules but each day a new player is sidelined. Top that, the QB position is still unsettled as Donte Shorts and J. Harris rotate at practice and during games with the first unit. The Jags defense secondary has been wrcked with players sidelined due to academic issues. The Jaguars are coming off a 51-27 loss at home to the NSU Demons of the Southland Conference. Homestanding PVAMU Panthers ( 0-2) are going for win one as they host Southern at PV since 1967. Coach Northern has suffered a close loss to TSU and a tough one to McNeese State. The Panthers’ QB has been great passing for over 400 plus yards in only 2 games. Their defense is still a work in progress. The Panthers look to break into the win column at home .
Grambling State ( 0-3 ) heads to Jackson , Miss. to take the Jackson State Tigers (2-1) in what as billed as the PAYBACK game for not making it for the JSU homecoming last season. Coach Fobbs and his Tigers have been on a reclaimation tour of sorts trying to win back the GSU faithful and at the same time win some games. GSU have put up fights in 2 of theri 3 losses. Against Lamar and BCC, the Tigers lead and was primed for a win until more miscues happened. Fobbs Tiger have fight in them, but they will need a complete game if they want to upend the JSU Tigers. The Blue Bengals are coming off a blowout loss to Tennesse State 35-7. That loss brung them back to reality after posting wins over FAMU and Virginia Lychburg. This game Saturday should be high energy as both are seeking their first conferenc win. However , those JSU Tigers will have alot to play after having their homecoming ruined last season by GSU not showing up to play the game. Revenge is on their minds.
AAMU Bulldogs ( 1-2 ) travels to the lone Star State to take on the 3-0 Texas Southern Tigers. Coach James Spady Pistol Offense has been short of a pistol. The Bulldogs were embarrassed on national Television by NBCU power NC A&T 47-13 AND then Hammered by UAB 41-14. They picked up a respectable win at Tuskegee 30-17. The Bulldogs welcome SWAC play as they look to steal one in Houston. Texas Southern has been playing lights out. The Tigers offense has been short of splinted. Coach Darryl ASberry has really turned around the program. Not only are the Tigers winning games but they graduating players also. Their defense has come to life as they have limited opposing offenses. Coach Vital defense has turned the tables on the likes of PV, Texas College and Central State just recently. The Tigers look to make history again as they go for 4-0.
Swac football is upon us and the fun begans……Stay tuned….realsportsrealtalk.
