Good morning,  Well week 2 of college football has passed as as usual , cupcakes looking for a payday equals an easy win for bigger schools to pad their record. Within SWAC Play, the same senario exist as well. Last Thursday, Texas Southern hosted NAIA Texas College and the Tigers basically practiced for their showdown in the Bahamas by putting a beat down on the Steers 52-14. The Tigers scored and will and often. AAMU played a tough Tuskegee Tiger team from the SIAC but the Bulldogs pulled off a 30-17 victory on the road. Coach James Spady’s Pistol offense gave the Tigers fits as the pounded and pounded the smaller school in controlling the line of scrimmage. The Bulldog’s needed a confidence builder as they prpare for their next foe, Grambling State. Jackson State didn’t waste any time disposing of Virginia Lynchburg 59-0 at home. The Tigers coming off a hail mary victory over FAMU , Took their coach’s advice and went to work on UVL from start to finish. With that win, the Tigers head into Memphis 2-0 to tangle with the 1-1 Tennesse State , losers to Alabama State 27-21. The Hornets got their first win of the season at home against a tough TSU team of the OVC. The Hornet’s defense stiffled the Tigers with 2 big interceptions that eventually sat up the game winning TD. UAPB took out it’s frustrations on Concordia to the tune of 31-0. The Lions were able to do something they couldn’t do against Texas State a week earlier: SCORE. The lions scored often agianst the smaller school dominating both sides of the ball and basically getting a much needed win. After losing to the Sun Belt champs 45-6 and not having 8 Players, Southern returned home to take on Central Medothist, a tiny school playing their first game of the year, the Jaguars found their groove to the tune of 56-14 victory. Coach Dawson Odums has been dealing with a few distractions as the Jags may be without 5 players for the remainder of the season due to certification issues with the NCAA. However, this win was much needed as the Jags prepare to take on Northwestern State at home this week. Alcorn State  gave Southern Miss a scare as the Braves took the Golden Eagles to the limit losing 26-20 in the closing moments of the game. The Braves QB John Gibbs threw a late interception as the Braves were driving for the upset bid. MVSU went on the road to take on Horizon Conference power Illinios State . Recieving a decent payday will help the Delta Devils cash strap program. However, the 62-0 thrashing does nothing but make MVSU a bit better. Grambling State continued their regional tour as the school’s administration and marketing team has reached out to alumni and donors to help the Tigers get over the national debacle that has put a black eye on the small northern Louisiana school. The Tigers realing from a early loss to Lamar visited Houston to take on the Cougars who were reeling themselves from an early season loss. The Cougars took out thier frustrations on the Tigers to a tune of 47-0. The Cougars got their confidence back early as they scored at will against the smaller Tiger team. Grambling fought hard but not enought to break into the scoring column. As stated earlier, Cupcake week was the day to get an easy win or to get a much needed payday for your program. Stay tune as week 3 will bring more cupcakes victories as well as rilvaries among bigger schools……….realsportsrealtalk
