SWAC FOOTBALL: What did we learn from Week One?

Good morning and welcome back to another year of great conversation detailing SWAC/NCAA Football. Well let’s get down to it…….Jackson State needed a Hail Mary to defeat the FAMU Rattlers of the MEAC 22-17 in Jackson , Mississippi. Coach Harold Taylor’s start would have been a disaster if not were the luck of God. The Tiger’s get an easy break this week as the host tiny Virginia Lychburg, a 55-7 loser to SWAC foe Alcorn State. QB John Gibbs keeps getting better and better as he continues to rise up the ALL TIMME Ladder in Passing yards and effieciency on the Braves HOF record book. Meanwhile, the MVSU Delta Devils got off to a good start at home by defeating Faith University 32-7 in Coach Rick Comengy debut. The Devils kept putting pressure on the  Faith’s QB all day long which resulted in terrible field position which added up for more points for MVSU. The Devils hit the road for a tough one at Illinois State this week. Alabama State made the treck to Texas to take on the top FCS program, Sam Houston State. It was a long night for the Hornets as the SHSU put up 51 points for their first win of the year.  Coach Reggie Barlow took the loss in stride as he looks to put this one behind and focus on his home opener against Tennessee State this week. Alabama A&M didn’t fair well either as they were taken to the cleaners in Orlando by Rob Broadway and his NCA&T Aggies 47-13. The Aggies looked in mid season form as they scored at will. Coach James Spady pistol offense spuddered and could get anything going. The MEAC continues to dominate the SWAC in the series yearly. The last SWAC win was Southern’s victory over Delaware State a few years back. UAPB took a beating also to FBS Texas State 65-0. The lions looked over mpowered from the beggining as the BOBCATS scored at will. Grambling opened up the FOBBS era in Beaumont and foght hard , however falling short to Lamar 42-27. The Tigers look to erase 2 years of infertility and bounce back to it’s traditional winning ways. The Tigers visit University of Houston this weekend as both enter the game at 0-1. Southern began it’s quest for another SWAC Title however, losing to ull 45-6 on the road. The Jags have had many issues on and off the field as several players had not been certifield by the NCAA to play. The Jags also have QB issues as they try to replace ALL SWAC QB Dray Joseph. Southern looks to break into the winning column at home against tiny Central Medothist this weekend. In concluding, the Labor Day Classic always brings excitement to Houstonians alone. Coach Daryl Asberry notched his second classic win as his Tigers bested his native son HICE Northern and PVAMU Panthers 37-35 in NRG Stadium. The Tigers’s Homer Causey and Rick Hall gave the Panthers fits as the kept them off balance all night long. The Tigers scored in the air quit often. PVAMU had a chance to win the game but on a 4th down , Northern chose to punt and give his defense a chance to win the game however, TSU scored a long TD pass from Hall to Plummer to seal the deal…..Now week 2 starts….Who will break in the wining column.? Who will remain winless? Who will clean up their act and get things going in the right direction?…Stay Tuned………realsportsrealtalk
