SWAC FOOTBALL: MONEY GAMES AND RIVALRIES ON TAP FOR WEEK ONE…..

Good evening and I am back ready for another exciting installment of 2013 SWAC Football. As the 2013 season approaches , we have a few money games on tap for the next two weeks or so and a few renewed rivalries to add to the mix. On Thursday, the 2013 SWAC season kicks off as the Jackson State Tigers invade the Mercedes Superdome to take on the Division I Tulane Green Wave in a game that could raise a few eye brows. The Tigers are picked high the  SWAC East division however , the must replace ALL SWAC WR Rico Richardson . The Tigers have a stable of quality transfers as well as quality athletes to go with a great coach in Rick Comengy. However, with 4 players suspended for the first game of the season, Curtis Johnson’s Green Wave may be primed to be upset. On Friday, the Jaguar Nation invades Houston to take on the Cougars in Reliant Stadium. Dawson Odums did a good job in getting 4 good wins over JSU, GSU, FAMU , and TSU last season. However, the nation expects more from Odums who was named head coach permanently last Spring on the Bluff. The Cougars , under Tony Levine will try to duplicate 2008 season as the Cougars throttled the Jags 55-3 that season. Friday night lights will definitely be in full effect in Reliant Stadium. On Saturday night, the rivalry continues as the PVAMU Panthers visit Houston’s BBVD Stadium to take on the TSU Tigers in what is billed as the Labor Day Classic. I do expect a sellout crowd with SU in town for the Labor Day weekend. Up in Grambling , La. , Doug Williams will host his friend and former NFL teammate Anthony Jones and the AAMU Bulldogs in a key SWAC contest for both ball clubs. Both the Bulldogs and Tigers are coming off disappointing seasons. Jay Hopson and his renewed Alcorn State Braves welcome in tiny Edward Waters College as a prep for September 7 clash with the SEC Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville. That game should be a nice payday for the Braves program. Reggie Barlow and the Alabama State Hornets host MVC Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the new Hornet Stadium. Former TSU DC Kevin Ramsey calls the defense for the Hornets. Monte Coleman and his defending SWAC champs travel to Jonesboro to take on the Sunbelt’s Arkansas State Red Wolves in a nice match Saturday night. The Lions have a lot to prove as they ran the table in 2012. On Sunday, Karl Morgan takes his Delta Devils to Orlando to represent the SWAC in the SWAC/MEAC challenge in the Citrus Bowl. MVSU will tangle with FAMU Rattlers in a game of contrasting styles as well as contrasting uniform colors. For the Delta Devils, getting some national exposure will be great for a program that has been down for some years however, this past year the Devils finshed 5-6. Morgan will have a lot to say to those MEAC Rattlers on the field. As we open up the season, there should be a lot of surprises as well as a few disappointments. I smell football and SWAC bands in the air………….realsportsrealtalk!
